Frequently asked questions

Which technique should I start with?

Coherent at the Standard level: five seconds in, five out, no holds. It is the best-studied rhythm and the default. For a stressful moment try Sigh, for winding down at night Relaxing 4-7-8 (or Calm if holds feel hard), and before something demanding, Box. Options → Compare the techniques explains each one.

I feel dizzy or light-headed.

Stop and breathe normally — breathing should always feel easy. Next time choose the Gentle level, or a technique without holds such as Coherent or Calm. If you are pregnant, have a heart or lung condition or get panic attacks, prefer the patterns without holds and ask a doctor if unsure.

Why can't I hear anything?

Check Options → Cues: the sound at the turning points can be set to Off, and voice guidance is off until you switch it on. Each has its own volume slider. Sounds play even with the phone on silent, so also check the phone's volume buttons.

Does a session keep going when I lock the phone?

Yes, as long as a sound, the voice or the music is on — the audio is what carries the session. The Lock Screen then shows the session time with Pause and Finish buttons. A completely silent session pauses when you leave the app and carries on when you come back.

What is Extra Focus?

A small ball you steer along the wave with the up and down buttons at the bottom right. Keeping it inside the moving circle gives your hands and eyes something gentle to do, which helps your attention stay on the breath. Switch it off in Options for a hands-free session.

How do the daily reminders work?

In Options → Reminders, switch on Daily reminders and pick up to five times. The first time, the app asks for permission to send notifications. If they were refused, turn them on in the iPhone's Settings → Notifications → Breathing.
