Frequently asked questions
How many players do we need?
Two teams, each with at least two players — four people in total, with no upper limit. If you'd rather not pick sides yourselves, tap "Shuffle teams" on the setup screen to split everyone at random.
How does a round work?
Each team picks a clue-giver for the round, and both clue-givers secretly see the same hidden word — nobody else looks. Each then privately bids how few one-word clues they'd need to get their team to it, without seeing the other's number. The lower bid wins the right to play. That clue-giver gives single words one at a time, and their team gets one guess after each clue, until they find the word or the clues run out.
How is it scored?
Get your team to the word within your bid and you score 1 point. If you fall short, the other team gets one chance using only the clues already given — no new ones. They can gamble on a guess, which is worth 2 points if they're right and nothing if they're wrong, or play safe and take a guaranteed 1 point. That's why bidding very low is bold but risky: miss, and you hand the other side points.
What happens if both teams bid the same number?
A quick head-to-head decides who plays the hand, so a tie never slows the game down.
How long is a game?
You set the target score on the setup screen, anywhere from 3 to 40 points — the first team to reach it wins. You can also set the highest opening bid, from 4 up to 10 clues, which caps how cautious a bid is allowed to be.
Which words does the game use?
The words come in three decks — Easy, Medium and Hard — and you can turn each on or off. They're also grouped by theme, so you can play with just the topics you like: Animals, Food & Drink, Nature, People, Home & Things, Places, Arts & Sport, Science, Mind & Society, and Myth & Magic. The setup screen shows how many words your current selection gives you.
Can we use our own words?
Yes. Switch on custom words and you'll write your own list before the game begins instead of drawing from the built-in decks. You'll need at least six words to start.
Can a clue be part of the secret word?
No. Every clue must be a single word, and it can never be the secret word or any part of it. Beyond that, anything goes — which is where most of the fun lives.
